It’s not always best to call shotgun.
When I was younger, my grandparents or parents and I would take a trip to Pigeon Forge every summer. Most of the time my younger brother and a few cousins would go along too. So there we were, packed into the back seat of this small, four door car; lost in the midst of pillows, blankets, board games, and movies. I was never any closer to my family than I was on those road trips, literally.
If you’ve ever driven through Tennessee you will know that most of the surrounding scenery are trees, hills, and mountains. And hey, I enjoy the average tree and mountain just as much as the next gal but the outdoors aren’t particularly my niche. The scenery really is beautiful but we were on our way to the strip, the tourist attractions, hotels and more. Looking back I remember not really knowing where we were at about 90% of the time. It wasn’t until we started to see the things we were anticipating, that my cousins and I would simultaneously say “we’re here!” and “we’ve made it!”
It didn’t matter if it was my dad, my papaw, whoever that was driving; I trusted them to get me to the place I was so excited to get to. There were times that it was sunny, times of pouring rain, and times of insanely thick fog. I was almost oblivious to the hours of unfamiliar scenery and at times, intense weather around me. That being because I knew that even though I had no idea where I was at, I trusted the driver that He would get me exactly where I needed to be.
This is the same way we need to be with Jesus. In life there will be times that you have no idea what’s going on; you look around and seemingly, everything is unfamiliar. I’ll be completely honest with you, I often still feel like the younger me. I know there are greater things to come. I know that whatever God is cooking up for the future will be so much better than anything I could dream up; I’m excited to get there. Meanwhile, on the journey there, I just as a kid, don’t know where I’m at 90% of the time. The key to peace in all this uncertainty is being completely certain in this one fact and that is this: You can trust Jesus; He’s a good driver. Wherever you are suppose to be in life, you can have confidence that He will get you there.
“I was almost oblivious to the hours of unfamiliar scenery and at times intense weather around me. That being because I knew that even though I had no idea where I was at, I trusted the driver that He would get me exactly where I needed to be.”
I know what it feels like to look out the windows of life and have no idea where you are or what’s happening. The perspective you gain on this deems the grasp you have on your worries. You can let it scare you or excite you. Learning to trust God isn’t an overnight thing; it’s an everyday thing. Its a simple but elaborate truth that if you are seeking and trusting God with your life, leaning on Him and asking His direction for your life [Proverbs 3:5-6] that no matter what anyone does or says, no matter what happens, wherever you’re suppose to end up- you will get there.
” The key to peace in all this uncertainty is being completely certain in this one fact and that is this: You can trust Jesus; He’s a good driver. Wherever you are suppose to be in life, you can have confidence that He will get you there.”
To have victory over our worries and fears of all the uncertainties in life we must follow the instruction Paul wrote us here:
Philippians 4:6-7 New King James Version (NKJV)
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
I challenge you to stop trying to call shotgun in your life, stop trying to grab a hold of the wheel. Stop concerning yourself so much with the question of where you are and start appreciating the beautiful scenery on the way to your destination. Take the backseat to your worries. Trust God and pursue His God given peace for your life. I know you may not be familiar with the roads He’s driving you down right now but these are the very streets that pave the way to your promise. Enjoy the ride; Jesus is a good, good driver.
